Canon AE-1 / A-1: Replacing the battery door (3D printed spare part guide)
Share
The battery doors of the old Canon A series are unfortunately notorious for eventually giving up the ghost and breaking off. But hey, don't panic! We have addressed the problem and created a precisely fitting Replacement Battery Door for Canon AE-1 / A-1 developed, which we offer directly in our shop. It fits perfectly on your Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program or Canon A-1.
Here I'll show you how to easily remove the defective door, save the important original parts and install our 3D-printed replacement. And stick around until the end - I have a little bonus tip for the often missing winder cover.
What you need
- The 3D printed replacement battery door (available in our shop)
- A slim, pointed lever or mandrel (to unlock the hinge)
- A small Phillips screwdriver (for the lock)
- Tweezers or fine needle-nose pliers
- WD-40 (or something similar for cleaning/lubricating) and a paper towel
- A flat surface so that the tiny parts don't disappear
Briefly in advance - what you will continue to use from the old door
Important to know: Our 3D door comes without the internal locking metal piece. So you absolutely have to save the long metal pin and the small screw (including the plastic plate) from your old, broken door. Without these original parts, the new cover will not hold.
Step-by-step instructions
-
De-energize & open. First take the Battery (4LR44) out and open the flap as far as it will go.
-
Loosen hinges. Grab your pointed tool and press the hinge in the direction until it audibly "clicks" or gives way. With a little gentle force, the metal pin can be pushed out - then you can simply wiggle the old flap out. Be careful with the small metal or plastic part and put everything aside safely.
-
Remove the locking mechanism. Since our spare part does not have an integrated lock, you have to "transplant" the lock from your old door. You will need the Phillips screwdriver for this. It's just a single screw - but be careful, the parts are tiny!
-
Clean hinges (if necessary). The hinges are often dirty and jammed over the decades. If you already have the pin out, treat it to a rub with some WD-40 on a paper towel. This will make the new part run smoothly later.
-
Insert the locking piece into the new door. Now the puzzle piece comes into the new Battery Door. Use fine pliers or tweezers to carefully insert the small component. Orientation aid: The short part points towards the camera, the long part towards the flap.
-
Insert the flap into the housing. Push the head of the hinge into the holder on the camera. Use a tool to push the pin completely into the groove until the flap is securely seated.
-
Fine adjustment & test. Is something still wobbly? Then push the hinge pin a little further in. The flap should be tight but not jammed. Aligning the small locking part can be a bit tricky - patience is your best friend here.
- Insert battery & close. Put the 4LR44 battery back in and close the lid. It should click into place cleanly and open as before.
Tips & common problems
- Parts management: Use a magnetic bowl. There is nothing more annoying than looking for the tiny original screw in the carpet.
- Flap wobbles? Usually the pin only needs to be pushed a millimeter deeper into the lock.
- Hinge is stuck: A touch of WD‑40 works wonders, but please don't drown the camera in oil.
- Original parts are a must: The long plastic part of the original lock must be intact, otherwise our replacement door will not engage.
A little Easter egg: Replace the winder cover
Is the small round cover for the motor drive also missing from the bottom of your camera? We know this problem all too well. That's why we also have a solution for this: A Winder cover for Canon AE-1 / A-1that perfectly matches the color of the body. By the way, you can use a coin to tighten it, if you don't have a suitable screwdriver at hand.
Conclusion
A broken battery door is not a death sentence for your beautiful Canon. With the right spare part, a little patience and standard tools, the problem can be solved quickly. Take good care of the small original parts and your AE‑1 or A‑1 will be ready for the next film in no time.
With this in mind: good light!
